Tokens glossary

Tokens Glossary is a template that collects different naming options for tokens.

In this template, you’ll find a table organized into tabs, with each tab representing a specific token. Inside each tab, there is a list of related terms grouped into categories, making it easier to find what you need.

For example, in the "color" token column, you’ll find the "prominence" category with options like "strong," "light," and "medium," referring to the different shades that may exist in your design system.

At the end, there is a feedback section where you can share your opinions and suggestions. I hope it inspires you to building the naming conventions for your tokens.

Introduction

I created this template because, like many of you, I often get confused with the vast vocabulary related to tokens. This is a curated collection of terminology I've gathered from well-known design systems. My aim is to provide a clearer overview of the available vocabulary, which can help you develop your own naming configurations for tokens.

This template serves as a small glossary that I will update periodically for both myself and you. My goal is to create a practical resource that everyone can use as a starting point in building their own token naming systems.

Structure

There are three tables included in this template:

• Tokens glossary: It encompasses all the information and is divided into tabs for different token categories. Within each tab, you’ll find further divisions based on categories such as prominence, states, sizes, etc., containing all the terms related to that token.
• Tokens categories: It provides a comprehensive list of all the tokens and their definitions, making it easy to reference their meanings.
• Compound tokens: It lists all the compound tokens, such as typography, which is formed by the combination of text styles, font sizes, line heights, etc. Here, you can see all the available tokens within a design system.
